Goal
Design and document a renovation for a section of Cornell University’s Human Ecology Building.
Developing the plan.
The main features of the first plan involved integrating more programs that didn't currently exist in the space. This mainly involved a materials shop, an additional photo studio, and a relaxation/meditation room. Additionally, I wanted to open up the narrowness of the space, as well as allow more opportunities for natural illumination.
In the second plan, I incorporated an additional program of presentation / private workspaces. Since this project took place during the pandemic, such spaces were, and as of now continue to be, relevant to academic and professional life. I wanted to give users the opportunity to access such spaces should it be necessary.
In the third plan, I shifted the program a bit to change the use of some spaces. First, I increased the size of the materials shop, since I realized that the inherent multi-purposefulness of a workshop and materials area could even accommodate a classroom environment. This led to me shrinking the teaching/research space and the kitchenette, with the former being justified by the presence of other faculty labs in the building. I also moved the photo studio in response to the increased footprint of the materials shop. Last, I broke up the relaxation space into two, providing opportunities and accommodations for different needs.
The final plan was for the most part the plan I carried through the rest of the project. This plan saw further additions of a film room (a space not found within the existing building; providing opportunities for presentations and lectures) as well as a re-introduction of a gallery space which exists in the current building. I also decreased the reception size so that circulation could be more clear around the Manager and Chair offices. Last, I moved the open space to the right (East) side of the building so that a new entrance point could be added.
